Concussion and Whiplash

Symptoms following a concussion or whiplash can be physical, cognitive, emotional, and sleep-related. In my treatments, I focus on the nervous system’s and connective tissue’s response to the trauma, as well as the emotional reactions that may arise as a result of the trauma’s impact on daily life.

Connective tissue and the nervous system communicate with each other — even in the case of a head injury

Connective tissue provides direct access to the autonomic nervous system and the alarm response that has been triggered by trauma. What we perceive as tension in the body is an expression of the connective tissue’s communication with the nervous system. Through touch, small movements, and mindfulness, we can invite the tissue in your face and body to release its state of tension. Over time, you can learn to sense and move from within, allowing you to initiate a shift in your nervous system yourself — which will positively impact both your physical and emotional state.

Fascial Flow Treatment won’t cure your concussion, but it can lower your body’s stress levels and release tissue tension around your neck and skull. This can lead to less pain and create the conditions for your nervous system to regain its balance.

Movement Following a Concussion

Movement Following a Concussion

Following a concussion or whiplash, many people find that their bodies become stiffer and more tender over time. At first, this is primarily related to the area of the injury, but later, stiffness and pain can also spread to larger parts of the musculoskeletal system. This is because the connective tissue has contracted as part of a defense mechanism, which alters the sensory input from the nerves that run through the connective tissue. This impairs natural mobility and normal body awareness, and the body may feel fragmented. Following a neck or head injury, the tissue loses its elasticity and shock-absorbing function. This makes the area even more vulnerable and sensitive to movements such as jumping, pushing, or falling. With slow Fascial Flow® movements, you can gently encourage the body to release its tension and restore the elasticity of the connective tissue.

Pernille treated me with great care when I came to her with my third concussion. I was in a depressed state and in pain. For the first time in two months, I felt a sense of wholeness during the session — as if my body was beginning to come together. Pernille’s treatment spoke to my body in a subtle language through slowness. Tiny, tiny steps. After individual treatments, I took a Fascial Flow group course. There, I learned to communicate with my body in a whole new way, which supported me in my self-care and in the things I was capable of doing. Paradoxically, the depth and slowness of the exercises accelerated my healing. I am grateful for Pernille’s help and support; it has meant a great deal to me. I highly recommend her as a therapist.

Diet

A head injury causes inflammation in the brain and the surrounding tissue. To best support the brain, nervous system, and connective tissue during the healing process, I can provide guidance on diet and dietary supplements. If more extensive treatment is needed, I can refer you to appropriate treatment programs.

Family Members

It can be difficult to be a family member of someone suffering from the aftereffects of a concussion or whiplash. This is an invisible brain injury that neither the person affected nor their family members immediately understand. The trauma is rarely visible on a scan, as it consists of microscopic damage to the nerve pathways and supporting tissue surrounding the brain. However, the consequences can be significant and make it difficult to hold down a job or participate in family life and normal social activities.

In this regard, I suggest that you bring a family member to your first session so that, together, we can build a stronger foundation of understanding regarding the steps that will be necessary over the short or long term.
